BCLT and Habitat Welcome Two Families into New Affordable Homes in the Heart of Bolinas

Celebration marks a new beginning for West Marin families and the expansion of much-needed affordable homeownership in the region.

New Homes on Aspen Road: Bolinas Community Land Trust Welcomes Two Families

On September 14, the Bolinas Community Land Trust (BCLT), in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco (Habitat GSF), welcomed two families into their new homes on Aspen Road. The families, joined by more than 40 guests, celebrated the fulfillment of a long-held dream: homeownership in Bolinas, a community they love.

The event was a reflection of the collaborative efforts of countless community members. From local volunteers, construction crews, and the sweat equity invested by the families, to the partnership between BCLT and Habitat GSF, this project demonstrates the power of community in overcoming the challenges of affordable housing. As one of the few organizations in California partnering with a community land trust, Habitat GSF worked closely with BCLT to develop this innovative solution for affordable homeownership in Marin County.

A Place to Call Home in Bolinas

For the two families, owning a home in Bolinas had long seemed out of reach. Both families have deep roots in the area, and the opportunity to stay in their community has brought relief and joy. Michael, one of the new homeowners, shared his gratitude: “My daughter slept in her own room last night in the house that we own. Because of organizations like BCLT and Habitat, we now have a place to call home in the town we love.”

Housing affordability is a critical issue in Bolinas, where housing costs have skyrocketed due to limited housing stock and the rise of short-term rentals. The average home price now stands at $1.75M, making it nearly impossible for families to remain in the area. BCLT has been working to counter this trend by creating sustainable housing opportunities that allow residents to stay in the community while maintaining Bolinas' unique character.

A Vision for Sustainable, Affordable Housing

These two new homes on Aspen Road are part of BCLT’s ongoing efforts to provide long-term affordable housing solutions in Bolinas. The partnership with Habitat GSF also resulted in the completion of two homes on Overlook Drive last year, and BCLT is now in the early planning stages for eight additional affordable homes along Wharf Drive.

Anne O’Connor, Executive Director of BCLT, highlighted the impact of this project: “These are families who care deeply about the Bolinas community and its natural landscape. For decades, they’ve been priced out of homeownership. But now, with the support of BCLT, Habitat, and the broader community, they can build a future here.”

The new homes, designed with sustainability in mind, feature all-electric, energy-efficient appliances and rooftop solar panels. They are a reflection of BCLT’s commitment to environmentally conscious housing development that meets the needs of working families in Bolinas.

About the Homes:

  • Two detached prefabricated single-family homes

  • 3-bedroom, 2-bath units

  • Energy-efficient appliances and rooftop solar panels

BCLT is proud to play a vital role in keeping Bolinas families rooted in their community and ensuring that future generations can continue to thrive here.
