Affordable Homeownership

BCLT is proud to offer permanently affordable, community-controlled land and housing in Bolinas, ensuring stable, long-term access to homeownership.

Our affordable homeownership opportunities are made possible through a strong and growing partnership with Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco. In 2022, BCLT became the first community land trust to collaborate with this national organization, marking a significant milestone for both groups. Together, we’ve successfully sold four homes using the Habitat model, with eight additional homes currently in development. This partnership is a powerful example of how community-led efforts can create lasting, affordable housing solutions in areas like Bolinas, where housing affordability remains an ongoing challenge.

Our Affordable Homeownership Program focuses on increasing access to homeownership for families to build equity and put down reliable roots in Bolinas. For far too long working families have been excluded from the prospect of homeownership by systemic inequities and the housing crisis we are facing in the Bay Area. With the time-tested Habitat homeownership model, we strive to remove barriers and enable families to experience stability and build equity across generations.

According to research conducted by the Habitat for Humanity U.S. Research and Measurement Team, improvements to affordable homeownership lead to positive outcomes that extend beyond the house. In communities across the U.S., affordable homeownership has been linked to increased economic stability, improved access to quality education, greater civic and social engagement, better health outcomes, and a reduced environmental footprint.

“To be standing here now is just incredible. My daughter slept in her own room last night in the house that we own. The economics of living in the Bay Area over the last 20 years meant we never thought we would be able to build our own home right here in a place that we love. Because there are organizations and community members like the ones here today that are absolutely committed to supporting families and affordable housing options, we finally get to call a place home,”

— Michael, Habitat Homeowner in Bolinas
